Harborfields High School held its first-ever induction ceremony on April 15 for the school’s new Business and Marketing Honor Society of New York State, welcoming 55 members. Honor Society President Maddie Barbaccia, a senior who plans to study business marketing and advertising at James Madison University this fall, gave a memorable speech to her fellow inductees.

“Having a strong business department is extremely important to the individuals in this community, as each year there are 390,000 undergraduate business degrees conferred, which makes up 54% of the total population of college graduates,” Barbaccia said. “Business offers a variety of fields of study, and Harborfields allows students to explore these fields in various ways. To my fellow classmates and inductees, you should be very proud of your extra efforts in propelling yourself towards your future career and for achieving this honorable recognition. To our parents and family members here to support us, we thank you for all you have done. To the teachers, faculty, and administration, thank you for your continued support of all of us in everything we do.”

“Business is one of the most popular college majors, with one out of every five college degrees conferred in a business area,” said Dr. Alison Matthews, Harborfields’ business department coordinator. “Preparing for business careers in high school allows students to develop leadership skills, perform service, develop character and advance scholarship. Our department provides a wide array of classes and activities for students interested in business, including college-level accounting, marketing, business law, computer and career awareness courses. Harborfields students have the opportunity to earn up to 27 college credits and obtain two different CTE graduation pathways in entrepreneurship and education. Students can join the DECA Club, and now they have the opportunity to be acknowledged in the new Harborfields chapter of the Business and Marketing Honor Society of New York State. We are so proud of these students, and they definitely deserve to be recognized.”
