Honoring Our Veterans

On Thursday, November 7, Washington Drive Primary School came together to honor and celebrate our beloved Veterans.

The celebration started with breakfast provided by the PTA, where the veterans and their families could spend time together. The event continued with no shortage of meaningful touches! First, the Hall of Heroes, where students and staff honored family members who have served. The red and blue posters made for a beautiful decoration, but the stories and photos were the most special part.

Mrs. McNally, WDPS Principal, Dr. Manning, Superintendent, and Mrs. Chmura, WDPS teacher, all shared remarks and thanked the Veterans for not only attending the celebration, but for their courage, bravery, and dedication to our country. Mrs. Chmura invited the Veterans and their Washington Drive relative to move to the chairs by the stage for a front row view of what was to come.

Next, students cheered, clapped, and waved as they paraded past the Veterans and their families while patriotic music played in the background. Some students got out of the parade line to hand deliver cards to the Veterans. The final group of students to come through was Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Chmura's class. They stopped in front of the Veterans and gave a heartfelt performance of a few nostalgic songs. The smiles on the Veterans faces made it clear that they had been touched by the students gratitude and appreciation.

The students were dismissed back to their classrooms, but there was one thing left to do to honor these incredible individuals. Mrs. McNally asked the distinguished guests to add their signature to the sign that represented their branch of service: Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, or Coast Guard. While they were signing, she asked them to share their branch and years of service.

With respect, honor, and gratitude... thank you, Veterans!
