The OMS Community Service Club transforms an aging garden into a native plant oasis!
Dr. Zenyuh applied for a grant through ReWild Long Island to create a native pollinator garden in the OMS courtyard. ReWild Long Island is dedicated to protecting and improving the resilience and health of regional ecosystems. They achieve this by collaborating with local communities and helping them adopt sustainable landscaping practices, centered on the use of plants native to our region.
Between last spring and now, Dr. Zenyuh and her students worked together to remove invasive plants, weed, mulch, and water the soil so it was ready for the new native plants. The students will continue to take care of the garden and in the spring, the courtyard will be transformed into a beautiful native plant oasis.
News 12 Long Island meteorologist and garden expert, Alex Calamia, stopped by OMS to see the garden. Stay tuned for details on the segment he filmed for "Garden Guide" coming soon!
