Superintendent's Message

I stopped by Ms. O’Toole’s fourth-grade classroom to find her with two of her students who earned lunch with their teacher. Elia and David were so proud to have earned this very special treat.  Thank you to Ms. O’Toole and all of our teachers and staff who go above and beyond to build special connections with their students! Way to go, Elia and David!

A Short but Successful Week at HF!

I can’t believe we are already at the midpoint of the first quarter of the new school year! Progress reports for middle and high school students were posted to the portal last Friday, offering families an opportunity to check in on their child’s progress. As we head into the second half of the marking period, I encourage you to speak with your child about how the school year is going, what they are enjoying, and any goals they have set for themselves.

I also hope you’ll be able to join us at some of the exciting events coming up, including potential playoff games for several of our varsity teams! Be sure to check the district calendar for upcoming events and updates.

School Safety - Appreciation for Community Partnership

The recent tragic event in Bend, Oregon provides yet another reminder of the need to stay vigilant when it comes to the safety of our students, staff, and community.  What I truly value about our Harborfields Family is our shared understanding that we all have a role in the security of our schools.  I continue to encourage our families to have conversations at home regarding any concerns that can then be brought to the attention of our school leadership team.  As a reminder, the district has an anonymous reporting system (ARS) linked on our website that is monitored 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

I am also extremely grateful to our Board of Education for their leadership in conducting security audits and supporting this work through the allocation of funding in the annual budget and through Capital Bond Projects to complete facility enhancements in accordance with the recommendations of those audits over the years.  This latest capital bond project included many security enhancements and, now that the work is mostly finished, the district is completing its next audit.  We know there is no finish line to this important work.

I want to thank the community for serving as a critical partner in our work to ensure our schools remain safe spaces for our students to learn and thrive!

Getting In on the WizFit Action

The Harlem Wizards returned to Washington Drive Primary School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School to celebrate the culmination of the Wiz Fit Challenge, and everyone had a BALL! Students and staff brought the energy to these fun-filled assemblies, and I couldn’t resist joining in on the action myself! Fundraising runs through October 20, leading up to the big event on November 6, when the Harlem Wizards and the Harborfields Teaching Tornadoes take the court. Special thanks to the PTA Council for helping create such a fun experience for our students!

Harborfields’ Got Talent is Back!

Calling all singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, magicians, and performers of ALL kinds! Whether you’re ready to take center stage or show off a hidden talent, this is YOUR moment to shine! Open to students from ALL Harborfields schools! This is a district-wide event hosted by the Harborfields Council of PTAs, with proceeds directly supporting our students and the continued enrichment of our schools. Apply today!

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

Wednesday, October 14 was a busy day of learning and preparation at the high school. Nearly 400 students took part in the district’s first in-school PSAT administration, while seniors spent the day exploring contemporary issues and preparing for life beyond high school. Thank you to the Suffolk County PD Second Precinct and Assemblyman Stern for their partnership, and to the school counselors and staff for making this a meaningful and successful day for our students!

Oldfield Middle School

OMS kicked off its second year as a Sources of Strength Licensed Program! Peer Leaders completed their training and are ready to promote hope, health, and strength throughout our school community all year long! Way to go, OMS!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

TJL held its first official No Place for Hate Committee meeting of the school year! Nominated student leaders joined teachers, staff, and administration to explore the qualities of great leaders and work together to establish meaningful goals for the year ahead! We are so proud of our students for stepping up, sharing their voices, and helping us continue to build a school community where everyone belongs!

Washington Drive Primary School

Students visited the Makerspace to learn about artist Yayoi Kusama and talk about how every dot can be different—just like each of us! Then students put their own creative spin on her famous dot artwork by designing pumpkins covered in colorful, one-of-a-kind dots.
